Each car held an enormous number of people (700?) and the design of the tunnel and car system prohibited passengers exiting by the side of the train (in a tunnel) in an emergency. The end doors were it! The patents resulting from John's concept and design got the Metro-Cammel company the lucrative build project. Of course, it was their idea to find an innovative solution for this purpose.
